A QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response Code) is a two-dimensional bar code that many companies utilize in marketing.

Recently, the QR Code system has become popular because of its fast readability and greater storage capacity compared to standard UPC barcodes. The code consists of black modules (square dots) arranged in a square grid on a white background. The code can be read by an imaging device, such as a smartphone camera. The applications for use can vary from product tracking, item identification, time tracking, document management and general marketing purposes.

It is most commonly used today for urls. For example, some vans display a large version of their company’s QR code, hoping a passerby is interested enough to take out their phone and ‘read’ the code and go to their website. It’s a form of marketing. You can run it in your print ads, in magazines or newspapers and it sends people to a link with info or a story.
